okay, here are my guesses,
1. The years are in B.C., not A.D.

4. He uses the piles of dirt from the tunnel expedition to build a mound to get up to the unbarred window :P

lol, the only one I can think of is No. 2; a mountain. That's just because I was reading the Hobbit the other day--Gollum had a riddle like that. :)
